Rhododendron campanulatum, the bell-flowered rhododendron or bell rhododendron, is a species of flowering plant in the family Ericaceae, native to northeastern India, eastern Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, and southern Tibet in China.
Description[edit | edit source]
Growing to 2ā4 m (6.6ā13.1 ft) in height, it is an evergreen shrub with leathery leaves that are elliptic to oblong-obovate, 7ā12 by 2.5ā5 cm in size.[2]
The flowers are purple-red to white, with red spots.[3][1] They bloom from April to June in the Himalayas,[4] and May to June in Tibet.[5]
The tree fruits from July to September.[5]
Taxonomy[edit | edit source]
The tree is called zhong hua du Juan (éč±ęé¹) in Chinese.[5]
Habitat[edit | edit source]
Rhododendron campanulatum is native to Northeast India, eastern Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, and southern Tibet where it grows at elevations of 3,000ā4,300 m (9,800ā14,100 ft).[2]
It is the state flower of Himachal Pradesh.[6]
