English: Sandstone sculpture of Lord Vishnu. About AD 950-1050, possibly Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India.
Many of the largest and most magnificent surviving temples in India are in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. Inscriptions reveal that most were built between about AD 900 and 1150 by the Chandela dynasty, their ministers, and Jain merchants. Some of the temples are dedicated to the Hindu gods Vishnu, Shiva and Surya, and to the 24 Jain tirthankaras.
