English: Yamuna. Gupta period, 5th Century AD. From Ahichchhatra, UP.
Delhi National Museum, India. Yamuna personifies the Jumna river. Her upraised hand carries a pot which contains the life-giving waters. She is flanked by an attendant holding a parasol, and stands on a tortoise. Statues of Ganga and Yamuna were typically carved in matched pairs, on either side of a temple entrance, in order to bless the temple precincts with the fertility and abundance of their waters. |
