English: Now meet Lokamanya, the first broad gauge dc electric locomotive built in India, a WCM-5. This is in the Regional Rail Museum in Kolkata (Calcutta) in east India. I have grown up around these locomotives, and when they were withdrawn, they had a beautiful cream- royal blue livery. It was indeed sad to see this WCM-5 in this frayed condition. The WCM-5 is a class of 1.5 kV DC electric locomotives that was developed in 1961 by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) for Indian Railways. A total of 21 WCM-5 locomotives were built at CLW between 1961 and 1963. The WCM-5 served for nearly 40 years. In 1998, the last WCM-5 locomotive ran with the Indrayani Express between Bombay (Mumbai) and Poona (Pune). (Kolkata/ Calcutta, Apr. 2025)
