This monumental image shows the historical Buddha at Bodhgaya just before his experiencing enlightenment. He is seated in meditation on a lotus throne (padmasana). The vajra (a multi-pronged thunderbolt symbol) denotes it specifically as the 'diamond throne' (vajrasana). The lower hand gesture calls the earth goddess to witness the Buddha's detachment from worldly attachments.

Presented in 1877 by Sir H. B. E. Frere to the Architectural Association, and given by the Architectural Association.
