വൈക്കം മുഹമ്മദ് ബഷീറിന്റെ കഥകളിൽ ആത്മപരതയാണ് കാല്പനികാംശം എന്ന നിലയിൽ പ്രമുഖമായികാണുന്നത്. സമൂഹോന്മുഖമായ കഥകൾ എഴുതുമ്പോഴും ആത്മപരമായ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടിലൂടെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം തീവ്രസത്യങ്ങളെ ആവിഷ്കരിക്കുന്നത്. പ്രപഞ്ച രഹസ്യത്തിനു മുമ്പിൽ വിനയത്തോടെ ജിജ്ഞാസയോടെ നിൽക്കുന്ന ഏകാകിയായ താനും അപരതയും തമ്മിലുള്ള അമൂർത്ത വിലയത്തിന്റെ നീലരശ്‍മികൾ പ്രസരിച്ചതാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പല കഥകളും. യഥാർത്ഥ്യത്തിന്റെ പകൽ വെളിച്ചത്തേക്കാൾ യഥാർത്ഥ്യതരമായ ഒരു നിലാവെളിച്ചമാണ്‌ ബഷീർ കഥകളിലെ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ നിറഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കുന്നത്. ബാഹ്യ യഥാർത്ഥ്യത്തെക്കാൾ അവ മനോവൃത്തികളിലുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന പ്രതികരണങ്ങളിലാണ് ബഷീറിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധ.
   " കേശവൻ നായർ ചായക്ക്‌ ഓർഡർ ചെയ്തു. കാപ്പി മതിയെന്ന് സാറാമ്മ പറഞ്ഞു. രണ്ടു പേർക്കും ദേഷ്യം വന്നു. ഒടുവിൽ കേശവൻ നായർ ഒരു ചായയും സാറാമ്മ ഒരു കാപ്പിയും കുടിച്ചു. സൂര്യനും വളരെ ഭംഗിയായി ഉദിച്ചു."
