This monumental image shows the historical Buddha at Bodhgaya just before his experiencing enlightenment. He is seated in meditation on a lotus throne (padmasana). The vajra (a multi-pronged thunderbolt symbol) denotes it specifically as the 'diamond throne' (vajrasana). The lower hand gesture calls the earth goddess to witness the Buddha's detachment from worldly attachments.
