English: A map extract showing Cochinchina. The Empire of Annam was unified in 1802 by Nguyễn Ánh and consisted of two former domains: Cochinchina (Đàng Trong) and Tungking (Đàng Ngoài), which bordered each other along the Gianh River (marked Giañ-giang on the map).
Cochinchina itself comprised Upper Cochinchina and Lower Cochinchina. Three eastern provinces of Lower Cochinchina were conquered by France in 1862; the remaining three western provinces were annexed in 1867.
